WHO WE ARE
MARACATUpdx exists to foster community through the awareness of and participation in Brazilian music, namely Maracatu Baque de Virado of NE Brazil. The primary way we create awareness and opportunities for participation is through our performing ensemble, the Community Group. Participants meet regularly and sing, drum and dance. During the Spring, the group prepares for it’s annual event of marching in Portland’s Pride Parade that is put on by Pride NW. In addition to the parade, they also play events such as Seattle’s Folklife Festival and Salem’s World Beat Festival.
MARACATUpdx was started by a group of friends and Maracatu enthusiasts in the Portland area. The ensemble currently draws additional friends and participants from Seattle, Hood River, Corvallis and beyond. Every year the number of participants, including parade monitors and supports, totals over 50 people.
MARACATUpdx exists to foster community through the awareness of and participation in Brazilian music, namely Maracatu Baque de Virado of NE Brazil.
We want to see a vibrant expression of Maracatu and Brazilian culture in Portland and throughout the NW focused around educational opportunities and a community group of drummers, dancers, singers and supporters.
Brazilian Music and Culture is community focused, joyful and self-empowering.
Community. We can do great things when we all play our part.
Inclusion is the best way. Everyone has something to offer.
Education. We all have things to learn. There’s always more growing to be done.
